Column of Contemplation — Original
Pen, ink, and watercolor on paper — Aurora Collection
Original, one of a kind · Signed by the artist, 2016
Stillness, flanked by storm.
On either side of this composition, dense washes of black watercolor bleed and feather outward into sharp, wild strokes — like wind-blown grass, or static, or the visual equivalent of noise. The ink moves unpredictably here, pooling and dragging across Arches watercolor block paper in a way that can never be precisely repeated.
Between them, a narrow column holds its ground. Hundreds of fine liner lines curl and loop in tight, contained rhythms, building a dense woven texture that reads as ordered and quiet against the chaos pressing in from both sides. It is the calm center of the piece — the place the eye returns to after being pulled outward by the turbulence surrounding it.
Column of Contemplation pairs two completely different ways of mark making — the controlled permanence of fine liner ink and the loose, organic unpredictability of watercolor on absorbent paper — into a single composition about balance between structure and release.
